BHW LIPA BITE – NEW CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO CARRY GUNS IN PUBLIC

On June 23, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the New York law that restricted carrying guns in public, stating that people have a right under the Constitution to carry weapons in public. Now gun restriction laws in states, including California, are in jeopardy. The Supreme Court decision also weakens the gun safety law that President Biden signed into law the same week.

BHW LIPA BITE – SUPREME COURT CANCELS THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE

After almost 50 years of Roe v. Wade being the law providing a woman and a family the right to choose, on June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the U.S. Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. The case Dobbs v. Mississippi Department of Health overturned Roe v. Wade, and starting immediately, states have either banned or substantially restricted abortions. In most of these states, performing an abortion is a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail.

Arkansas: All abortions banned except to save the life of the mother.
Idaho and Texas: All abortions banned.
Mississippi: All abortions banned except when the mother’s life is at risk or if the pregnancy is the result of a rape and a formal charge is filed with the police.
Oklahoma: Abortions banned after 6 weeks (many women would not know they are pregnant at 5 or 6 weeks)
Wealthy people will still be able to choose by travelling to states that permit abortions. The poor and many minorities will not have the same access.
